My husband, sons, and niece chose to spend a week in Mexico to get away from the Wisconsin winter. Velas Vallarta is a beautiful resort with many amenities. The hotel is on 10 acres directly on the beachfront. You can sit on your balcony and see the ocean and see the Sierra Madre mountains behind you! That is my personal happy place — seeing mountains and the ocean at the same time.
Velas Vallarta is within walking distance of an 18 hole championship golf course, for those interested. My son golfed there and said that the course played well, and he loved the signs warning to be on the lookout for wildlife…crocodiles and ocean birds! I wish he had taken a picture of that sign!
I spent my time on the beach in one of the many cabanas, being taken care of by waiters who brought me drinks, chips and salsa, and fruit plates. I also had my pick of one of the three swimming pools (one even has a waterfall!), or going to the swim-up bar.
This is the view from one of the buildings. As you can see, there are balconies and flowers everywhere. There are resident iguanas (the largest I saw was about 3 feet long) and there are also peacocks that roam the meticulously groomed grounds.
There are several restaurants on site, and there’s also a spa. There are nightly activities in the main lobby; casino night, karaoke, a mime/clown/acrobat group, and a mariachi band.
The area is safe to walk, and we walked to the Marina area, where there are many more restaurants. A 10 minute cab ride is all it takes to get downtown Puerto Vallarta.
Velas Vallarta was a wonderful resort and provided a great place to relax and spend time together as a family.
